Sri Lanka
In a country where Buddhism is the majority religion, minority Christians, Muslims and Hindus face pressure that affects their religious freedom.
A country afflicted by centuries ethnic conflict
The ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka is a dispute between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. The government, representing the Sinhalese majority, won a military victory in the conflict on May 18, 2009. Very brutal means were used to suppress the Tamil Tigers.
The religious minorities report an increasing number of violations of religious freedom and threats and attacks from extremist Buddhist groups, with little support from the government.
At Easter 2019, three churches and three hotels were attacked in a coordinated terrorist attack that killed around 270 people.
